Did we really think that Olympia would put the real Wellbrexa study in her safe? Of course she didn’t, and it proves that she is now a step ahead in Matlock season 2, episode 2.

Caution: This post contains SPOILERS from Matlock season 2, episode 2.

At the end of the Matlock season 2 premiere, it looked like Matty had managed to get the upper hand by stealing the Wellbrexa study. Well, Olympia didn’t trust that Julian wouldn’t take it, so she made up a faked document and then hid the original in another place.

That means Matty has a copy of a fake document, and now she needs to slow down. And Olympia even makes it clear that she has to slow down, or she will make sure Matty and Edwin go to prison for the laws that they’ve broken with this whole ruse.

Olympia continues to be one step ahead in Matlock season 2, episode 2

If that wasn’t enough, Olympia manages to get a recording to Matty making it clear that she knows that she’s breaking the law. Well, she’s manipulating it, and it won’t be Alfie who is without the people who raised him; it will be Olympia’s children.

To be honest, at this point, Olympia is breaking the law by holding onto the document. I don’t blame her for what she’s doing, as she’s trying to take down the bigger fish, but she is putting herself at risk.

As for Julian, he’s welcomed back at the firm, but not in the position that he once had. He will need to take a lower position, and that means losing a lot of the benefits that he once took for granted. This is going to be a humbling moment, and it could be a make-or-break moment for him. Could this allow him to see the type of man his father is, and how he needs to help bring his dad down?

Julian struggles with it, though, and it takes Olympia to knock some sense into him. While riding the subway is bad, it’s not as bad as being in prison. He needs to thank his lucky stars that he has his ex-wife on his side.

Edwin offers Joey a chance (but is it a test he’ll fail?)

Meanwhile, Matty and Edwin need to deal with Alfie and Joey. Now that Alfie knows that Joey is his biological dad, he wants to see him. Matty and Edwin don’t think that it’s a good idea, but Alfie suggests that they pay for Joey’s rehab and then they can have a relationship.

I get that Matty is being protective of Alfie, but sometimes, children need to see why guardians are doing what they’re doing. Edwin does eventually offer Joey a chance, though, and it feels more like a test that Joey is given to fail.

Edwin offers Joey a check and a brochure for a rehab center, and now he has a choice. He can cash in the check and use it for whatever he wants, or he can go to rehab with it and get clean. If he does the latter, he gets the chance to see his son. Now for rehab to work, an addict needs to want to get clean, and it’s not clear if Joey does want that. Maybe by knowing that Alfie is on the other side of it will make him want to, but Edwin and Matty know what it’s like to be around and addict, and they will know how their minds work a little, so I do fear that they’re setting Joey up to fail to prove a point to Alfie.

Maybe they want him to fail because they’re planning their move to San Francisco. Of course, that’s not happening just yet as Olympia has made it clear that she has the power here. Matty is stuck at the law firm for a little while longer.

Matlock airs on Thursdays at 9/8c on CBS.
