Throughout Season 11, Voight went on the hunt for a serial killer. He managed to protect one of the killer’s victims, but not for long. The killer managed to outsmart everyone, and the victim ended up back in his hands.

In the end, Upton wasn’t going to let Voight die. She managed to get to him and save his life. The finale ended with an important and heartfelt discussion between the two cops. Was Voight a bad influence on Upton? That was certainly what he thought to himself.
Upton reassured him that he wasn’t bad for her. In fact, he helped her achieve what she needed to be able to then look for more in life. He made it clear that she did deserve more, and gave her his blessing to move onto pastures new.
What’s next for Voight in Chicago PD Season 12?
So, what’s next in Season 12? Voight is another team member down, so he will need to find someone to take that spot. Petrovic seems like the obvious choice for now, but will he find someone else to step into the void that Upton has left?
If the writing is good, there should be some trauma from the near-death experience that he goes through. This doesn’t have to take over considering everything Voight has already been through in his career, but it should be something as his subconscious tries to work through the events.
We’ll also need to see his connection to other members of the team. For the last few seasons, there has been a big focus on being a father figure to Upton. He has spent a lot of episodes helping her through her decisions and working with her on cases. It’s time to see him working with others and encourage them to take the next steps in their career. Could he convince Atwater it’s time to take the detective's exam?
