Chicago PD finally returned this week and answered the major question as to the status of Halstead and Upton's marriage! Are they through or not?

Caution: This article contains SPOILERS for the Chicago PD Season 11 premiere

The first episode of the new season embraces the long delay due to the Hollywood strikes by jumping ahead six months. That included how Rusek was recovering but not quite able to return to duty just yet.

A major moment was Upton working at home and seeing something that stunned viewers: Divorce papers. It's no secret that Season 10 had Upton dealing with Jay suddenly leaving Chicago when he refused to let Hailey and Voight cover up Jay killing a suspect in a fight.

He enlisted in the army, hinting it would only be for a few months to clear his head. But as time went on with no word from him, Upton discovered Jay had re-upped his tour without telling her. That added to her problems, distracting her on the job.

Voight confronted Upton as he'd seen the papers with Upton snapping that she still hadn't heard from Jay in a year, so this was the only course of action. She just hadn't gotten around to mailing the papers yet.

It was obvious this was distracting Upton, causing her to miss a key clue in a case that almost sent an innocent man to jail and inadvertently contributed to two deaths. The episode ended with Voight visiting Hailey at her new apartment, which she'd lived in for months but still hadn't unpacked all the boxes.

Hailey admitted she felt lost and just not sure how she could go on without Jay, with Voight doing his best to handle it. It looks like Season 11 will focus more on her feelings.

What's coming for Upton in Chicago PD Season 11?

Speaking to TVLine, showrunner Gwen Sigan shared how the writers were happy to capture Upton's honest feelings about the end of her marriage.

"She knows she feels angry. She knows she's not herself. She knows she's not moving on. She knows it doesn't feel healthy, but she doesn't understand what is going on and how to fix it. We're going to see her figure out what's going on, and also ways to get out of it and ways to feel better and to get to something else."

Upton has already felt the effects being distracted on the job can have with this case. She has to realize continuing to dwell over Jay is only going to hold her back and cause more problems, but giving up on a marriage is never an easy thing.

This quite likely is setting up Tracy Spiridakos' confirmed exit from Chicago PD as Upton may feel there are too many bad memories to stay in Chicago.

It looks like Season 11 of Chicago PD is going to put Upton through a tough wringer and, sadly, closes out the Upton/Halstead relationship for good.
