Shemar Moore may be busy trying to find a new home for his SWAT spinoff series, but that doesn’t mean he didn’t make time to return to a former soap opera he once starred in. Does this mean there’s a chance he could appear on Criminal Minds: Evolution?
TVLine reported that Moore would be returning to The Young and the Restless alongside actress Viviana A. Fox for a multiepisode arc that has been kept carefully under wraps.
Moore portrayed Malcolm Winters from 1994 to 2005, making guest appearances over the years, including in 2023 following the death of actor Kristoff St. John, who portrayed his brother Neil. Fox had a guest stint on the soap for a year in 1995, in which her character, Dr. Stephanie Simmons, briefly dated Moore’s character.
They have reportedly already started filming, beginning on Tuesday, Feb. 17, and their episodes are slated to air in April.
What does this mean for Criminal Minds: Evolution? One of the reasons we never saw Moore reappear on the reboot of the Paramount+ streaming show was due to his schedule on SWAT. Despite Moore currently working on the spin-off SWAT: Exiles, the series is still looking for a home.
SWAT: Exiles has reportedly finished production, but is still waiting to find a home on a streaming or cable network.
This could indicate Moore could have time to appear in an episode or two of Criminal Minds: Evolution for season 4. So far, there has been no news about the upcoming season of the show, but given the previous season aired in May 2025, we could get news soon about when we can expect to watch the new season.
Fans have always hoped to see Moore return as Agent Derek Morgan, a role he portrayed for 11 seasons before exiting and reappearing in guest-starring roles. He was also mentioned in Evolution during the funeral of Agent JJ Jareau’s husband, Will LaMontagne. He had sent a floral arrangement in his absence.
Moore is among the former cast members whom fans have wanted to see return, which also includes Daniel Henney, who portrayed Agent Matt Simmons. Matthew Gray Gubler also returned for Will’s funeral as Dr. Spencer Reid, so he could also appear as well.
It will be great to see Moore return to one of his most famous roles, but we would also love to see him return to Criminal Minds: Evolution so we can see where Morgan is now. So until then, we will keep our fingers crossed on any other possible surprise appearances once news about Criminal Minds: Evolution is announced.
