Simon turns to Alec for help in The Irrational season 2, episode 5. Is there really a suicide epidemic at the college, or is something more nefarious going on?

Caution: This post contains SPOILERS from The Irrational season 2, episode 5.

Simon has certainly proven himself to kick off this season. He continues that in the latest episode, as he turns to Alec for help when it comes to dealing with what seems to be a suicide epidemic at the college. Alec knows that he needs to look into this to get to the bottom of it. Why have three students killed themselves on campus?

Well, it soon turns out that the third death isn’t a suicide at all. She was pushed, and now Alec and Marisa need to get to the bottom of it.

Hiding a drug overdose is a crime in The Irrational season 2, episode 5

The first port of call is the sorority. They are clearly hiding something at first. You don’t need to be an FBI agent or a behavioral scientist to figure that one out. The fact that the second floor isn’t an open book when Marisa wants to find out what’s going on with the latest student, Kenzie’s, death is suspicious.

After some time, Alec is able to get to the bottom of it. The sorority sisters found out that Kenzie had taken a drug overdose. They didn’t want that to come up, and when they couldn’t revive her, they thought the better idea would be to throw her off the top of a building and make it look like a suicide.

Yes, this is still a crime. It’s lesser than murder, but it’s a crime. It’s not surprising then that the sorority is being shut down after this. It’s while Marisa visits the sorority as it’s closing that she realizes that there is more to the entire situation.

Kenzie was trying to bring in something others didn’t want

Kenzie was working on an organ donor bill. While a lot of people know that this would be essential and helpful, there are always people out there who are against it. Would they be against it enough to kill Kenzie? Well, it turns out so!

Marisa couldn’t figure out how the toxicology report came back not showing the overdose that should have been in Kenzie’s system. That screams something bad is going on, and it’s at the sorority that Marisa is able to put it all together. The woman performing the toxicology report was an alum of the sorority, so she would have been allowed on the second floor. She also had the ability to falsify the toxicology results.

I don’t think this saved the sorority. The girls still did wrong trying to make the murder look like a suicide, but it does get them off the hook a little bit. It also helps to clear Kenzie’s name a little. She didn’t overdose. She didn’t knowingly take drugs.

There’s a little bit of closure for Kenzie’s dad, as well. He knows now what happened to his daughter. It’s made even better when Alec shares that he wants to continue Kenzie’s work. With his connections and the college, he should be able to push forward with this. Alec understands what survivor’s guilt is like, and he understands that need to keep memories alive. Even now that he has answers and justice, he’s still empathizing and continuing the fight.

Phoebe figures out what to do next in The Irrational

We said that the previous episode opened the door for Phoebe to head back to working for Alec. It was just figuring out how to figure that out since Simon had joined Rizwan. Alec would always figure something out if you asked him.

But why did she need help figuring something out? After everything that happened to Rachel, the funding was disappearing. Last in, first out. It’s a common saying, and it affects Phoebe during this episode. Her job is disappearing, and Rachel points out that Phoebe has had three research positions. She doesn’t show much loyalty.

This isn’t about loyalty to the job, though. Rachel knows that Phoebe turned her in, and she’s getting her revenge. She manages to blackball Phoebe out of other research positions. Phoebe turns to Kylie for some advice and help. I’m surprised she turned to Kylie as we haven’t really seen too many interactions between them, but I guess the show needed to bring Kylie into the story in some way and Marisa was busy with Alec. This suited the story even if it didn’t make 100% sense.

In the end, Alec fixes it. He can bring in a third research assistant. I hope Simon doesn’t feel pushed out. This isn’t connected to his work, but we get to see that loyalty and friendship are important to Alec. This is something for Simon to keep in mind as he continues working with Alec.

Overall, the episode brought up some important topics when it comes to college, sororities, and pressure at school. It could have pushed Kenzie’s bill she was working on a little more and solving the crime seemed a little too easy at the end, but it did it’s job for an early-season episode.
