We’ve heard plenty of the story from Amanda Knox’s side, but she wasn’t the only one accused of the murder of Meredith Kercher. In The Twisted Tale of Amanda Knox episode 5, we get a look at Raffaele’s side of the story.
Caution: This post contains SPOILERS from The Twisted Tale of Amanda Knox season 1, episode 5.
From the beginning of the story, we saw Raffaele stand by Amanda Knox. The two of them quickly ended up being the suspects, and the police did everything they could to make it look like they were guilty. It didn’t matter that not all of the evidence matched up neatly.
While getting Raffaele’s story, we also see how things came to an end with the first trial, which was the point we know the two were found guilty.

Why would Raffaele say Amanda wasn’t with him the night of the murder?
We have to go back to when Amanda was pulled in for questioning, as the police pushed and pushed for details. As they told her Raffaele had said that Amanda wasn’t with him that night and that he was just covering for her, things took a turn. Was it possible that she was wrong?
Well, no, we know that. So, The Twisted Tale of Amanda Knox takes us back to that night from Raffaele’s point of view. He’s getting the same grilling, and the police aren’t happy until he tells them the information they want. It’s funny how they disregard everything except what the want: that Amanda wasn’t there that night.

Raffaele’s backstory explored in The Twisted Tale of Amanda Knox
In between this and the scenes in the court, we get some backstory of Raffaele, including how as a young boy, he just wanted to be a hero. However, he couldn’t be that for his mom. He’d put his life on hold to look after her, but his sister encouraged him to leave town and create a life for himself.
This led to him being in the same place as Amanda, and it led to the start of their relationship. This was a relationship he clung to throughout the trial, and the more we learn about how he felt about his mom’s death and blamed himself, it’s easy to understand why. He thought he found his girl, and the two exchanged letters in prison.
Naturally, this didn’t look great to the outside world. What people don’t realize is that they were trying to remain sane. However, Amanda delivers a blow to him during the trial. She writes to him to break up with him. Well, not really breakup, but to make it clear that she just views their life together now as a friendship.

The night of Meredith’s murder in Amanda Knox
Just before we get the verdict at the trial, which included a sensationalized animated video of the events, we get a flashback to the night of the murder. Amanda and Raffaele were together, and they spent time talking about deeply personal things.
One of the big things was Raffaele’s mother’s death, which was of a heart attack. Up to her death, though, she would ring Raffaele multiple times asking why he’d left her and that she wanted to die. Naturally, Raffaele felt responsible for his mother’s death, even though it wasn’t his fault.
It’s a beautiful moment, and you’ve got ot wonder what could have been for the two of them had none of this happened; had the police not mishandled evidence and psychologically tortured them.

A verdict in the first trial
Throughout the episode, there are more scenes of the trial. We get to see how both Amanda’s lawyers and Raffaele’s lawyer attempt to push the fact that the evidence wasn’t handled correctly. If the police admit to mishandling evidence, how is it possible that this trial can go on? This is something that does later come up in the court cases in the future, but not for now.
Instead, we get to the end of the first trial in The Twisted Tale of Amanda Knox episode 5. We all know how it would end, but you’ve got to hope for a second that the jury realizes that the police didn’t do their job.
In the end, we get all the details of the various trials going on at the time. Yes, Amanda is found guilty of slandering Patrick. Yes, the two are found guilty of murder and various other crimes. Amanda Knox is sentenced to 26 years, and Raffaele is sentenced to 25 years.
There is a promise of appeal, but that’s going to take time. That’s also not going to give them their lives back after this ordeal. Press swarm everyone involved, with Meredith’s sister holding a press conference and answering questions, making note that it’s a bittersweet moment for them.
Before we close out the episode, we swing back to two years earlier after the discovery of Meredith’s body. There were questions of the bra, the bra clasp, and the possibility of standing on it. As we cut to a man holding a camera, we have to wonder if he caught something that could be used on appeal. We’ll need to wait for The Twisted Tale of Amanda Knox episode 6.
