Voight and Chapman can't be together unless everything we know about Chicago PD changes

Nobody is ever going to come between Voight and his true love in Chicago PD.

As Chapman shared her feelings for Voight in Chicago PD, there was a hint that a romance could blossom. It’s something the series has never done before, as Voight is a widower and pretty happy being alone.

In fact, during Chicago PD season 12, Chapman asked Voight about loneliness. Did he feel like he was alone considering he had nobody to share his house with? The truth of the matter was that he didn’t. He still had people who cared about him and people he cared about. He was happy with the life that he had.

It was the first sign that a romance between Voight and Chapman wouldn’t work. Then the Chicago PD season 12 finale hit the final nail in the coffin. Now for something to work, the show is going to have to change its fundamentals, and it won’t do that.

Voight and Chapman’s budding romance in Chicago PD explained

Over the last few seasons, Voight and Chapman have been able to bond over cases. It led to a surprise confession in Chicago PD season 12, episode 4, as Chapman admitted to having romantic feelings for Voight. She didn’t expect him to return them, and the conversation was dropped.

For the rest of the season, the relationship seemed to take a backseat for everything else that was going on. However, there were hints that maybe there could be something, as Chapman helped Voight handle the issue of Deputy Chief Reid. She was the one Voight trusted the most to find a way to bring Reid down the right way.

This led to the conversation about loneliness, and it was clear from that moment that Voight still wasn’t considering a romantic relationship with Chapman. Then in the Chicago PD season 12 finale, the attorney realized that Voight had a hand in the murder of Reid, leading to her realizing that he will never change.

Intelligence has always been Voight’s No. 1 priority

When it comes to Voight’s life, there is very little that comes between himself and his work. That means Intelligence. The people on his team will always be the no. 1 priority for him, and he’s proven that time and time again. He goes out of his way to protect them, expecting full transparency from them so he can lie for them.

On top of that, Voight’s dedication to his work is the one thing that most Chicago PD fans can agree on is a good thing for his character. He doesn’t always get the interrogations right, slipping into old ways, but he will do what it takes to protect the citizens of Chicago.

The only way to give Chapman exactly what she wants is for NBC to push for a change in Voight’s character. That won’t make sense, especially with him taking a backward step in it during the most recent season.

Is there any other way for Chapman and Voight to work in Chicago PD?

On the surface, it would seem like the two are doomed from the start. Voight isn’t going to change for Chapman, and nor would we want him to. He needs to keep putting Intelligence and his work first, as that’s what has made him the leader we all have come to respect.

So, there’s only one way for the series to make this relationship work. Chapman needs to accept that this is the man that she wants to be with. However, the end of the Chicago PD season 12 finale makes it clear that she can’t accept that. She was sure that Voight was a different man, until he showed her his true colors. They always say that when someone shows you who they are, you need to trust that.

It does seem that Chapman and Voight are doomed. Would it be nice for Voight to find someone? Sure, but not everyone ends up coupled up. There’s nothing wrong with a man choosing to be single and being happy with that choice. If Voight is going to end up with someone, though, it needs to be a person who accepts him for who he is, flaws and all.

Chicago PD season 13 premieres on Wednesday, Oct. 1 at 10/9c on NBC.
