Boston Blue opened with a lot of changes to Danny Reagan but Blue Bloods fans were surprised at a cameo that showed a major relationship upgrade!
Caution: This article contains SPOILERS for the premiere of Boston Blue
One of the big new shows of the 2025 fall TV season, Boston Blue premiered on CBS on Friday, Oct. 17. The show is a continuation of the long-running Blue Bloods as Danny Reagan (Donnie Wahlberg) heads to Boston when his son Sean (Mika Amonsen), a rookie cop, was badly injured in a fire.
Danny soon learned that Sean and his partner Jonah Silver (Marcus Scribner) had stumbled onto another crime. Danny pairs up with Boston detective Lena Silver (Sonequa Martin-Green) whose half-sister Sarah (Maggie Lawson) is Police Superintendent and their mother Mae (Gloria Ruben) is District Attorney.
The episode ended with Sean waking up from his coma as Danny decided to stay in Boston to keep an eye on him. He was helped by sister Erin (Bridget Moynahan) but it was a surprise Blue Bloods cameo that got fans talking!

Are Danny and Baez together in Boston Blue?
When Danny first appears on Boston Blue, he’s shirtless and talking to someone about maybe leaving more clothes at this place. That someone is none other than Danny’s partner, Detective Maria Baez (Marisa Ramirez), who’s wearing his shirt and little else. Yep, Blue Bloods fans, the two are partners in more ways than one!
There had always been a close bond between the pair as they worked over a decade as partners, each trusting the other. The series finale of Blue Bloods had Danny finally ask Baez if she wanted to grab a meal. It looks like it ended up with more.
Speaking to TV Insider, Boston Blue co-creators Brandon Sonnier and Brandon Margolis explained they wanted to build on that finale and show Danny and Baez together.
“The moment we realized that we were getting a chance to continue Danny Reagan’s story, we recalled that Danny was going to ask his partner out and audiences were left to wonder how that was going to go. We decided that the two of them are good together, and they were making it work. So, it was important to us that even though the episode [quickly] takes Danny out of New York, the one opportunity to show him before he left, was to have Baez there. So we were thrilled that Marissa — who’s an occasional guest star this season — was game to come play with us and that we get to tell a story about Danny Reagan going forward that she continues to be a part of.”
Ramirez told TV Insider it was Wahlberg who asked her to join, an opportunity she leapt at.
“He asked if I would want to be part of the new show and explore Baez and Dany’s relationship post Blue Bloods. Of course, I’m going to say yes. I don’t even know why he called to ask.”

Will Baez return in Boston Blue?
Ramirez confirmed that Baez will return for at least one more episode this season and perhaps more. It’s an obvious change for Danny to transfer from New York to Boston and Baez will want to check on him and likely see if this relationship is casual or something more serious.
Blue Bloods fans had long shipped the pair even as the actors downplayed any romance. For one thing, a romantic couple could no longer be partners on the police force, as proven when Jamie and Eddie got engaged and had to get new partners. Having Danny in a new city would be a logical way to work around that although the challenges of a long-term relationship between the two partners.
The pair appear to still continue that fun bond and banter and having Baez meet up with Lena would be a great big in Danny handling both women. Hopefully, it's a way to keep things going rather than ending it as Danny and Baez deserve a shot at making it work.
It’s a great way to pay off one of the lingering plot points of Blue Bloods and fans hoping that Boston Blue keeps this fun romance going for a bit!
Boston Blue airs Fridays at 10/9c on CBS.
