Julian isn't the true villain of Matlock (and we've been staring at him all along)

It's easy to think that Julian is the true villain of Matlock.
“Rome, in a Day” – As Matty settles into her new role at Jacobson Moore, Olympia and the aptly nicknamed “Team You Three” (Matty, Billy and Sarah) take on a lawsuit involving a developmentally delayed teenager whose family claims he’s been wrongly accused of murder. With the focus on the lawyer who hid the Wellbrexa study throughout Matlock season 1, it was easy to overlook the true villain of the story. The season 1 finale made it clear just who to watch out for, and this is something Matlock season 2 needs to build on.

At the end of the first season, we learned that it was Julian who hid the documents. However, he didn’t do it on his own, or even because he wanted to. This was something he needed to, and it’s all because of Senior.

Senior is the real villain of Matlock

Julian told Olympia that he hid the documents because of Senior. This isn’t all that surprising when you consider the type of man Julian is. He has always wanted to prove himself to his father, but Senior constantly looks down on him. There’s no need for it either, because he is a capable lawyer.

However, he crossed a line with the study. He did that on the orders of his dad, and rather than standing up to his father, he decided to prove that he is a good lap dog.

This immediately makes it clear that Senior is the villain to watch out for. He likely knows that Matty is on to him in some way, as he’s a man who likes to play the long game. Of course, that game could be up with the latest casting news. Justina Machado is coming into Matlock season 2, and Senior may need to watch his back.

Eva could expose the Wellbrexa scandal in Matlock season 2

It’s only a matter of time before the Wellbrexa scandal is exposed. It took us a full season for the documents to be found, but Matty hasn’t got all the information just yet. Now we’re waiting to see whether Olympia will choose to work with Julian or do the right thing.

What if she doesn’t need the documents, though? What if Eva has some sort of trick that will expose Senior?

When sharing the casting, we learned that Eva is Senior’s fourth ex-wife, and the one who swore him off marriage. It’s possible that it all comes down to the Wellbrexa case. If she knows that he did something, he may have paid her off in the divorce, but that doesn’t mean she has to remain quiet. With Olympia and Matty asking the right questions, she could end up giving them all the ammo needed to take Senior down.

Matlock season 2 will premiere on Sunday, Oct. 12 at 8:30 p.m. ET/8 p.m. PT on CBS before moving to its regular time of Thursdays at 9/8c.
