After a whole season of wondering where Roman is and what happened to him 15 years earlier, High Potential season 2 seems to promise that this mystery will be solved. However, while Mekhi Phifer seems to fit the bill, it’s highly unlikely that he is the mystery ex.
Caution: This post contains SPOILERS for High Potential season 2, episode 1.
The High Potential season 2 premiere ended with Oz and Daphne heading to the last known address for Roman. Mehki Phifer’s mystery character answered the door, and naturally, there are a lot of questions about whether he’s Roman or not.
When Phifer was first announced as joining the cast but in a mystery role, it did seem like he could be Roman. However, something doesn’t sit right with this reveal already.

High Potential won’t wrap up the mystery this easily, right?
The mystery of Roman just seems to have been wrapped up too quickly if Phifer is the man, and it’s because of that that I don’t think he is Roman in High Potential season 2. Let’s be honest; the series is all about mysteries and clues. Not all mysteries are overly difficult to solve, but this series has been smart in reveals.
It doesn’t make sense to quicky wrap up the Roman mystery considering how big it was throughout the first season. It’s also been a huge mystery for Morgan for 15 years. If he had just moved to Nevada and ran away, wouldn’t the cops have found him 15 years ago?
This would hint that Phifer’s character isn’t Roman, but he could be posing at Roman or even know where the man in. There’s definitely a bigger story to this arc.

Roman likely doesn’t want to be found
If High Potential follows the French storyline, then Roman turns out to be a bit of a deadbeat. However, I don’t think the U.S. version is going to go that route. I think Roman left to keep Morgan and Ava safe, as he’s been called one of the good ones before.
For Roman to keep evading the police back in the day, it would suggest that he doesn’t want to be found at all. Sure, people who abandon their lives don’t necessarily want to be found, but they won’t go to huge extents to avoid it. By taking all these steps, it hints that Roman knows the trouble if Morgan did figure out where he was.
There could still be trouble 15 years later. This could be why he’s rented out an apartment but asked someone else to stay there. It makes sense to throw a red herring Morgan’s way if he’s found out she’s looking for him again.
So, no, I don’t think Phifer is going to be Roman, and this mystery will continue to unfold throughout High Potential season 2. I am more than happy to be proven wrong, though.
High Potential airs on Tuesdays at 10/9c on ABC.
