It only took two months, but Amazon has finally confirmed We Were Liars season 2 will happen. Now eyes are on the book that this season will follow.
We Were Liars season 1 ended in a similar way to the novel. Okay, there were some changes to mark more closure and a way for Cady to really stand out against her family, but the big reveals of what happened the previous summer were the same.
There isn’t a sequel to the story, though. E. Lockhart ended Cady’s story there, but there is another story to tell. It’s that story that we’ll likely get in We Were Liars season 2.

Family of Liars is a prequel story to We Were Liars
There were hints at the very end of We Were Liars season 1 that the second season would likely follow Family of Liars. At the very end, Carrie nipped back into her house to grab some pills secretly. While there, she faced the ghost of her deceased son, Johnny.
This is how Family of Liars starts, with Johnny coming to see his mom. It turns out that he’s not the first ghost that she’s seen, and we learn all about it in the prequel story.
The first season even seemed to hint that Family of Liars would be the next story because of Bess. She asked if what they did during her Summer 16 was the reason for so much bad fortune. Well, maybe it is, but we need to know what they did. It’s all told in Family of Liars.

There are sure to be age changes in We Were Liars season 2
There were some timeline changes in the first season. For example, the events of Summer 16 in the show actually happened in Summer 15 in the book. Cady headed on a year with her dad in between the two summers, making it much harder for her to understand why her cousins and Gat would completely ignore her for two years. The TV series didn’t include the year away, so the events of the fire at the house were placed in Summer 16 instead.
Likewise, we’ll likely see changes to the timeline in We Were Liars season 2. Without too many spoilers, Penny is around 16 at the time of the story, with Carrie being around 18. That would make Bess younger, but we know from We Were Liars season 1 that Bess is 16 at the time of the incident.
These are just minor changes, and they’re likely more due to ages of the actors more than anything else. It won’t take from the events of the story, which are dark and twisty if you’ve read the prequel story.
We Were Liars is available to stream on Prime Video.
