Two months ago, the YA crime thriller We Were Liars dropped on Prime Video. It told us the story of Cadence Sinclair, who returned to her grandfather’s home to figure out what had happened to her the previous summer.
Along the way, secrets came out. As Cady started to remember more, we started to see more fractures in the family. However, some fractures do have a way of healing, and there was a sense of hope left over when We Were Liars season 1 ended.
Of course, without a confirmed renewal, all we could do was wait and hope for a second season. Deadline has the exciting news in that We Were Liars season 2 is going to happen.
We Were Liars season 2 is likely based on Family of Liars
When Julie Plec and Carina Adly MacKenzie optioned the novel by E. Lockheart, it came with the news that her prequel novel was also picked up. It’s the prequel that the second season is likely to be based on, and there were certainly hints at the end of We Were Liars season 1 to indicate this.
At the end of the first season, as everyone is leaving the island, Carrie is about to take some pills that she’s stashed. That’s when she sees the ghost of her son, Johnny, as he isn’t ready to leave her behind just yet. Nor is she ready to completely lose him.
Family of Liars picks up in this way, as we delve into the events of the past. This is something Bess hinted at as well, asking if the family was being punished during her Summer 16, which indicates that this is the secret that the two sisters and maybe even their middle sister Penny, have held onto all these years.
Lockhart has encouraged people to read Family of Liars to prepare for We Were Liars season 2.
When could We Were Liars season 2 arrive on Prime Video?
At this point, there isn’t a release date. However, this is the type of series that could be relatively easy to film, especially compared to the likes of The Boys. It is a little more like The Summer I Turned Pretty, which would have had a one-year turnaround had it not been for the 2023 dual Hollywood strikes.
So, it is possible that we could see We Were Liars season 2 sometime in 2026. If it really has to be pushed into 2027, then we’d probably be looking at early 2027.
