Morgan is the smartest person in the room in High Potential. Except for when she’s not. There’s an inconsistency in Morgan’s character that needs to be explained when High Potential returns.

From the beginning of High Potential, Morgan has made it clear that when a clue stands out to her, she can’t help but keep working on it. She’s like a dog with a bone with it, and we’ve even seen that happen in various cases.

Yet, for 15 years, she hasn’t been able to work out one mystery. Despite her being a dog with a bone, it doesn’t seem like that happened when it came to the disappearance of her ex, Roman.

Morgan hasn’t used her genius to solve Roman’s disappearance in High Potential

We’ve seen how smart Morgan is when it comes to cases. Throughout High Potential season 1, she would help the major crimes department get to the bottom of murders, and often there was one clue that stood out more than the others. That clue often turned out to be the key to help solve everything, and Morgan didn’t let up until she worked it out.

And yet, she’s spent 15 years not knowing what happened to Roman. At the beginning of the High Potential season 1 premiere, she told Soto that she would only work as a consultant if Soto looked into what happened to Roman. She knows he didn’t just up and leave like so many others said he did.

If she was that focused on finding out what happened to Roman, why didn’t she do the search herself? It sounds like she turned to the police, and then the police just gave up. With that came Morgan always questioning but not using her own genius to work it out.

This did start to change as Morgan got some of the answers she needed. She found someone who knew Roman, and she was able to get confirmation that he didn’t just leave Morgan and Ava as a deadbeat dad. However, now the investigation is somewhat out of her hands.

High Potential season 2 needs to explain this inconsistency

At the end of High Potential season 1, Karadec called Morgan to say that he had found Roman. It opens the door for Roman’s mystery to be solved in High Potential season 2, but it won’t necessarily be because of Morgan’s smarts. She has let Karadec take over, and he’s got the answers she needs.

However, High Potential season 2 does have the chance to explain why Morgan never searched for Roman. The simplest reason could be that it was too close to her. She will have likely been focused on raising Ava, and we’ve seen from flashbacks when others have asked why Morgan doesn’t remember a major news event that the chaos of life has taken over.

Once she did get a chance to breathe from raising a newborn, she could have found that trails ran dry. Then she met Ludo and they started their family, meaning Roman’s mystery was pushed further to the back of her mind.

We know that Morgan will take care of other people’s problems before her own. That’s not uncommon for people, so High Potential season 2 has plenty of ways to explain why Morgan didn’t look for Roman, but it does need to explain it.

High Potential season 2 premieres on Tuesday, Sept. 16 at 10/9c on ABC.
